Alternative Medicine
Alternative medicine is a broad term used to describe healing practices that developed outside of conventional Western medicine. Traditionally, these approaches were used instead of prescription medications or standard medical treatments. Over time, however, that definition has evolved.
Today, alternative medicine includes a wide spectrum of therapies; some of which are supported by scientific evidence or science-based rationale, and others supported primarily by tradition, historical use, or anecdote. Understanding this difference is essential.
At Marty Ross MD Healing Arts in Seattle, we draw a clear distinction: we use science-based alternative medicine as part of a broader, integrative approach to care.
The Spectrum of Alternative Medicine
Alternative medicine is not a single philosophy or system. It is a category that includes many different therapeutic options, including:
Herbal medicine
Nutritional and vitamin supplementation
Acupuncture
Chiropractic care
Massage and other manual therapies
Mind-body techniques such as meditation and breathwork
Energy medicine approaches like rolfing
Homeopathy
Naturopathic therapies
Oral peptides and compounded therapies
Some of these therapies have been studied extensively and have strong physiologic mechanisms and clinical data supporting their use. Others have limited or conflicting evidence.
It is important not to oversimplify. Alternative medicine is not automatically unscientific. At the same time, not every therapy labeled "natural" is evidence-based.
In our Seattle clinic, we evaluate therapies the same way we evaluate prescription medications: by looking at mechanism of action, safety profile, clinical evidence, and real-world outcomes.
How We Use Alternative Medicine in Our Practice
At Marty Ross MD Healing Arts, our Seattle-based team treats complex chronic illnesses such as Lyme disease, mold toxicity, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Long COVID, and other difficult-to-treat conditions. These illnesses often involve multiple overlapping systems: immune dysregulation, mitochondrial impairment, gut imbalance, toxin burden, chronic infections, sleep, stress-management, and nervous system dysfunction.
Addressing these systems requires more than simply suppressing symptoms.
Science-based alternative medicine gives us additional tools beyond drugs and prescriptions to correct underlying imbalances.
For example:
Herbal antimicrobials may target chronic infections while also supporting immune balance and limiting harm to the intestinal microbiome.
Nutritional supplements can correct deficiencies that impair mitochondrial energy production or immune function.
Mind-body techniques help regulate autonomic nervous system dysfunction that drives inflammation and fatigue.
Acupuncture referrals may assist with pain control and nervous system regulation.
Low dose naltrexone (LDN) can help regulate immune function and reduce fibromyalgia pain.
Methylene blue may support mitochondrial energy production and has activity against certain tick-borne infections including Bartonella and Borrelia.
Many of these therapies originated outside conventional Western medicine. However, when used thoughtfully, they are grounded in biochemistry, immunology, and clinical experience.
In our Seattle-based practice, we often begin with lower-risk, physiology-supporting therapies and escalate to prescription medications when necessary. At the same time, we are fully comfortable prescribing antibiotics, hormones, anti-inflammatories, gastrointestinal medications, and antidepressants when they are appropriate.
The Bottom Line
Alternative medicine refers to therapies that developed outside conventional Western systems. Some are scientifically validated and biologically sound. Others are not.
In our Seattle-based practice, we rely on science-based alternative medicine as part of a comprehensive, integrative strategy to help you recover from complex chronic illness.
Our goal is not to be "alternative."
Our goal is to use every appropriate tool available to help you reclaim your health.
That is comprehensive, modern medicine.
